Hi friends, If you’ve been hanging around for a while with me, you might know that I am terrible at knowing what’s popular or trendy. It’s one of the reasons I love Ayurveda- it has stood the test of time and isn’t the latest-greatest, and it is also meant to be tailored to the individual person in these modern times. I say all of this because I’ve recently become a little obsessed with Bad Bunny’s song Baile Inolvidable, which has been around for at least a year, and according to Spotify is BB’s second most popular song. It’s set to a sick salsa beat, and the chorus goes (in Spanish): “NO, I can’t forget you, NO, I can’t erase you. You showed me how to love, you showed me how to dance.” Gah, it’s filled with such heartbreaking longing. A woman in midlife recently said to me, “I was so cute when I was in my 30s, even my early 40s. I just keep saying, I’ll be myself again one day. I’ll get back to her.” Ah, but maybe instead, now we’re moving on to the upgraded version of her, and we have to grieve her like an old love. Instead of making me think of an old flame, Baile Inolividable makes me think of how I relate sometimes to my young self, and the grief we often have in midlife about letting go of that young person. Remember that when you were a girl, when you stepped into puberty towards womanhood and suddenly had hips or breasts, it may have been hard to let go of that adventure seeking gal who rode her bike, climbed trees and built forts (just me?). So now, as we release our fertile time of life and step into the middle and beyond, we honor this version of ourselves, grieve and eventually let go. I will never forget you, dear young one. You taught me to love. You taught me to dance. The title Baile Inolivadable translates to Unforgettable Dance, or a dance you can’t forget. Just like Bad Bunny’s love, young me won’t ever be erased. I’ll carry the young version of me always in my heart. AND I’m looking forward now as I keep moving through this transition to step into the newer version of me. My mentor says she looks better to herself in her 60s than 40s– it’s because she has that Ayurveda GLOW. In the meantime, be gentle with yourselves, dear ones. ♥️ Much love, P.S. I'm participating in another bundle-- basically a roundup of a bunch of free offerings from a group of amazing women for people in midlife, gathered up by Cassandra Martin-Himmon, the creator of Master Your Stress. Hi friends, A couple weeks ago, I went to my closest friend from college Michelle's daughter’s Bat Mitzvah. It was a wonderful time, and I saw some people I’ve known since college, but hadn’t seen in many years. It is so strange to see us all middle-aged. Like, we’re essentially becoming our parents. Some of us even have kids in college ourselves. (Not me– I didn’t have babies, and am a quintessential auntie). One of my old friends, well-meaning, was talking to me about how his wife has...
Hi friends, The shift into spring before the heat fully sets in is an ideal time to cleanse. Cleansing in Ayurveda is different from the typical Western-minded cleanse. It’s supposed to be gentle and nourishing, and coax the body into shedding what is no longer needed, reboot digestion, rebuild the gut microbiome, and more. Unfortunately, most cleanses out there clobber the body (like cold juice fasting) and though it may make you feel better in the short term, long term this type of harsh...
