A gentler approach

Hi friends,

The shift into spring before the heat fully sets in is an ideal time to cleanse. Cleansing in Ayurveda is different from the typical Western-minded cleanse. It’s supposed to be gentle and nourishing, and coax the body into shedding what is no longer needed, reboot digestion, rebuild the gut microbiome, and more.

Unfortunately, most cleanses out there clobber the body (like cold juice fasting) and though it may make you feel better in the short term, long term this type of harsh cleanse can cause more imbalance. Our bodies need a softer approach.

Another difference between an Ayurveda cleanse and a typical Western minded cleanse: the cleanse is designed to be for both the body AND the mind/spirit.

This is because Ayurveda acknowledges these things are not separate. And we see that as usual, Western science is trying to catch up to Ayurveda. So much science has emerged about how the gut affects the brain/emotions and vice/versa.

One of the main things a cleanse helps with at this time of year is moving excess vata out of the body post winter. If vata from winter isn’t cleared, its dry, rough qualities mix with spring’s melting kapha (earth +water), creating thick, sticky mucus that doesn’t move well. Instead of a clean seasonal “melt,” you get congestion that feels both dry and clogged at the same time, sometimes even crusty or stuck. As warmth increases, it can further thicken or bake the mucus, leading to lingering sinus issues, brain fog, and that heavy-yet-irregular feeling in the body.

“I participated in the Fall 2025 Cleanse, and I found it to be a deeply supportive experience. I was new to Ayurveda and the cleanse process, and I am so glad I got to experience it with Maria Gabriela as a guide!

I remember being nervous beforehand about how I would do on the kitchari diet (which ended up being great!), and Maria Gabriela provided such a steady, gentle, and responsive presence throughout the cleanse. Doing it as part of a group added depth to the experience.

Now, five months later, I notice that I have incorporated so many aspects of what I learned into my day-to-day life — including cooking and eating routines and how I relate to my body and life. I look forward to the next one!”

Other signs your body may benefit from a cleanse:

  • Bloating, constipation, gas, sluggish digestion, or feeling heavy after meals
  • Fatigue, brain fog, or lack of energy despite getting enough sleep
  • Acne, rashes, dull or dry skin, or increased irritation
  • Thick white or yellow film on the tongue, especially in the morning
  • Bad breath or body odor
  • Intense cravings, poor appetite, or inconsistent hunger cues
  • Difficulty falling asleep, waking up during the night, or not feeling rested
  • Heaviness in body or mind – sluggishness, water retention, or difficulty focusing
  • Getting sick easily/often during the seasonal transitions

Personally, I was feeling pretty heavy in my body and mind before completing my own personal cleanse this past week!

The Ayurveda cleanse is simple: eating a monodiet of mung beans and rice with vegetables called kitchari for all meals for 3-7 days, plus engaging in slowing down and as many self-care practices as possible.

I would love to lead you through a gentle Ayurveda cleanse, step by step. This is what the Seasonal Reset: A Community Ayurvedic Cleanse is all about.

The active cleanse starts on April 24th, with our first info session on April 21st via Zoom. All sessions recorded in case you can’t make them all live.

If you want to know more before signing up, join my free class on cleansing, All About the Ayurveda Cleanse, on April 11th.

Much love,

P.S. Early bird pricing ($20 off) ends TONIGHT! If you know you’re in, get IN!

P.P.S. If you’re in the Southern hemisphere going into fall, this is the other juncture when it’s ideal to cleanse. But instead of clearing out winter’s vata, you’re clearing out summer’s pitta (fire/heat).

Hi friends, If you’ve been hanging around for a while with me, you might know that I am terrible at knowing what’s popular or trendy. It’s one of the reasons I love Ayurveda- it has stood the test of time and isn’t the latest-greatest, and it is also meant to be tailored to the individual person in these modern times. I say all of this because I’ve recently become a little obsessed with Bad Bunny’s song Baile Inolvidable, which has been around for at least a year, and according to Spotify is...

Hi friends, A couple weeks ago, I went to my closest friend from college Michelle's daughter’s Bat Mitzvah. It was a wonderful time, and I saw some people I’ve known since college, but hadn’t seen in many years. It is so strange to see us all middle-aged. Like, we’re essentially becoming our parents. Some of us even have kids in college ourselves. (Not me– I didn’t have babies, and am a quintessential auntie). One of my old friends, well-meaning, was talking to me about how his wife has...
